ROME — It’s time to play the music, it’s time to light the light: The date and party are set for the iconic sign relighting at Revere Copper Products in Rome.
The company will hold a lawn party with live music, food trucks and more from 5 to 10 p.m. on Thursday, July 4, ahead of the highly anticipated relighting of its rooftop sign of Paul Revere. There will also be fireworks after the event.
“We’re relighting an icon. It’s bringing back history for Rome,” said Timothy Murphy, marketing and architectural services manager at Revere.
The public is invited to attend the festivities, which will take place in the open field off 1333 E. Dominick St. Copper City Brewing and the city of Rome are adding to the party and Fourth of July events. East Dominick Street will be closed from Sixth Street to Gansevoort Avenue.
The relighting itself will take place sometime between 9 and 9:30 p.m.
“It depends on sunset. We want it to get dark,” Murphy explained. Sunset will occur at 8:45 p.m. on July 4.
The iconic visage of the Paul Revere — who famously alerted fellow patriots with the news that British soldiers were about to march on the revolutionaries — has been dark for nearly 20 years, according to company officials. The lettering on the sign was installed in 1936, and the horse and rider were added in 1951.
Following a significant increase in business since at least 2016, company officials decided they wanted to relight the famous sign. They announced the project early last year and contractors have been hard at work with the refurbishment, which included replacing the old neon lights with new LEDs.
Serianni Signs of Frankfort, O’Connell Electric Company of Victor and C&S Companies of Syracuse all worked on the new sign, Murphy stated. “It went as smoothly as could be expected,” Murphy said about the work over the past several months. “Everything is completed on time. The contractors did excellent work.”
There will be fireworks immediately after the relighting. Attendees are advised to bring their own chairs and seating. Coolers and alcohol will not be allowed.
Revere is making a special effort to invite retired employees to the event. Any former Revere employee who would like to be involved is asked to contract the company at [email protected].
